PostSubject: 31st of January 2010 - 42nd Anniversary of Tet   Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:25 pm

The 31st of January, 2010 marks the 42nd anniversary of the Tet Offensive. On this day, an agreed peace treaty between North and South Vietnam to celebrate the Tet holiday (Lunar New Year) was broken when the North Vietnamese unleashed 250000 troops on urban centers in South Vietnam such as Saigon, Hue, Quang Tri, Qui Nhon, Da Nang, Bien Hoa, Long Bien, Pleiku, Lan Co and Vung Tau. This marked a change in the war - the Communists changed dramatically from their guerrilla and jungle warfare tactics into close quarters urban house to house fighting as they fought through the city streets of the largest cities in South Vietnam. This offensive shocked the entire world, only a few days beforehand the USA had announced that 1968 appeared to be the final year they would need to be in Vietnam - they were winning the war. However the warning was there.

In mid January SEATO intercepted intelligence that indicated that North Vietnam was planning a major offensive in urban South Vietnam. 1ATF (Australian Task Force) was immediately dispatched from their home base of Nui Dat 22km northeast of Vung Tau to the jungle east of Bien Hoa 50km to the west of Nui Dat where the radio transmissions had been intercepted from. However, they arrived too late and only met the tail end of troops - Operation Colburg (the planned interception of the Communist Main Force) was deemed as a failure and left 1ATF stranded at a joint Australian/American firebase, firebase Anderson and Nui Dat severely undermanned. Firebase Anderson became under siege and for 3 days was pounded by North Vietnamese mortars and assaulted by numerous North Vietnamese soldiers that severely out numbered the SEATO forces there. On the 3rd Day the wounded were evacuated and armoured reinforcements arrived.

Meanwhile on the 30th of January Vietcong Guerrillas managed to tunnel into the Saigon sewer system - an unguarded and hidden access route right into the middle of Saigon and behind the enemy installations. Their attack on the city began 5 hours before planned but nevertheless brutal house to house fighting broke out in the city as South Vietnamese, Spanish, Australia, American and numerous other SEATO troops tried to defend the South Vietnamese capital from the Vietcong.

A few minutes before the official commencement of the Tet Offensive 4 North Vietnamese Sappers disguised as South Vietnamese soldiers managed to infiltrate Hue city and made it to the ancient city's gates. They killed the guards of the gates and opened the gates. A few seconds later a large flare was fired into the air and thousands of North Vietnamese and Vietcong soldiers began pouring into Hue City. Tet had officially begun.

Shortly after, Vietcong and North Vietnamese regulars began pounding other major cities. Bien Hoa airbase came under attack, as did Da Nang and Quang Tri.

By the start of February the majority of Saigon had been resecured with surprisingly low SEATO casualties. The defenders fought of infantry, regulars, sappers and even suicide bombers to defend the capital. However, other cities did not fair well. Long Bien had become occupied by the Viet Cong and Australian armour was dispatched to drive them back out of the town. The ARVN and Americans had been forced out of Hue and the North Vietnamese had dug themselves into the northwest of the city into Hue Citadel and had destroyed the last major bridge into Hue Citadel whilst an American Armoured column pushed across. The Americans had expected the counterattack on Hue to be quick and win the city back within a few hours - this maneurver held SEATO back for 25 days.

Meanwhile, near the 17th Parallel Lang Vei special forces base had come under attack. This was a new Communist tactic they were using. Whilst former attacks would typically consist of an opening mortar and artillery barrage followed by a heavy machine gun strafing and rushing troops at the base, the North Vietnamese for the first time in the war used armour. 12 PT76 amphibious tanks stormed Lang Vei and Khe Sahn village and overrun it after a few hours. However, the US Special Forces garrisoned there with limited helicopter support manage to destroy at least 5 of the tanks - it is claimed by the Americans that they disabled 9 of the tanks and all tanks suffered some sort of battle damage. Lang Vei was razed and all Americans still there were killed or captured.

Khe Sahn Combat Base had come under a long siege that would last for 77 days as North Vietnamese armour, artillery an aircraft consistently pounded the air base in an attempt to break the Americans besieged there. Fortunately due to the superior American air power they were able to hold their position until American artillery tactics managed to scatter the North Vietnameses.

In Hue, the South Vietnamese attacked 10000 entrenched North Vietnamese regulars and veterans with the support of an understrength American Marine Battalion and Australian SASR teams. They managed to force a breach with an amphibious crossing of the Perfume River. South Vietnamese armour was ferried into Hue Citadel where the Communists were finally driven out of Hue city. However, it cost heavy numbers of South and American mainforce troops as well as wounded and killed several of the Australian nations most elite foot soldiers. What they found was absolute devastation - the Vietcong had massacred most of Ancient Hue's civilan population, beheading, tortuing, castrating, hanging or simply executing in a mass with the firing squad were all discovered. Hue became the most bloody battle of Tet.

Whilst the Tet Offensive failed for the North Vietnamese and left the Viet Cong eliminated almost entirely, it was fresh in the minds of every South and American citizen. They fought the war was unwinnable, and this came at a time where victory for SEATO seemed to only be around the corner. Whilst the Eastertide offensive of 1972 was more brutal and larger scale, it is undeniable that the Tet Offensive of 1968 was the most decisive battle of the war and showed the true Communist resolve and was a symbol of heroism for every Communist nation world wide. The American capitalist system and the Chinese traditional Communist system had just been made an epic fool by the Soviet Urban Communist system, and the world showed that if necessary the Soviet Union and her allies would be prepared to go to war and destroy anything that stood in the way of their ideals of global anti-capitalist influence.

No problem, I've always been a big worker with preserving the memory of Vietnam. I am your guy when you have something about the Vietnam War. I am a close worker of Vietnam ceremonies (at least the local ones, not like I go to Long Tan Rubber Plantation every year) or any war commeration ceremonies or tributes to the military. The military I see as the true heroes and will always be there for helping them. I plan on joining the Air Force through ADFA in the near feature.

Yeah, and that can be in any form, from cops, fire fighters and the military.

I do mention the Americans and South Vietnamese quite a bit throughout it - read it because I ain't making another one. I mention the Americans and South Vietnamese in particular with Lang Vei, Khe Sahn and Hue. The Australians also get their mentions during Operation Colburg, Firebase Anderson and Long Bien.
